Ground Deicing Awareness Training Program - 2025-26
This program is intended to provide a general overview of the aircraft ground deicing process to airline, service provider and airport personnel.
Contamination caused by snow, ice or frost on critical aircraft surfaces can have a detrimental effect on aircraft performance. International aviation regulations prohibit the take-off of aircraft when contamination is adhering to aircraft critical surfaces. This forms the basis of the “Clean Aircraft Concept.” To this end, procedures have been developed by the global industry to ensure that aircraft are de/anti-iced on the ground prior to departure.
The Pilot-in-Command has ultimate responsibility for the safe operation of the aircraft in all conditions, including during winter operations. That said, flight crews, cabins crews, ground crews, maintenance personnel and airline operations personnel must work as a team to ensure that aircraft are clean of all contamination and that operations remain in compliance with the Clean Aircraft Concept.
The Ground Deicing Awareness Training Program provides a general overview of the end-to-end aircraft ground deicing process for airline, service provider and airport personnel. It provides general knowledge to personnel wishing to support and/or oversee such operations, without the specific details required to actively participate in day-to-day deicing activities.
The Ground Deicing Awareness Training Program is intended to provide a general overview of the deicing process to airline, service provider and airport personnel. It is not intended for use by personnel who will be actively involved in the deicing process.
